Vande Bharat Express: A Symbol of Make-in-India

The first Vande Bharat Express was flagged off by PM Modi on February 15, 2019, on the New Delhi-Varanasi route. These trains are a testament to the Make-in-India initiative, showcasing India’s engineering prowess. The project to manufacture semi-high-speed trains in India started in mid-2017, and within a short time, the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai completed Train-18. It was renamed Vande Bharat Express in January 2019 to highlight its Made-in-India status and achieved a maximum speed of 180 kmph during trials on the Kota-Sawai Madhopur section.

Upcoming Vande Bharat Developments

In addition to the current Vande Bharat trains, Indian Railways has exciting plans for the future. They intend to launch a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat and Vande Metro by next year. The non-air-conditioned push-pull version with 22 coaches and a locomotive will debut in October 2024, while the sleeper version will roll out by March 2024.

Expanding Connectivity in West Bengal

West Bengal is set to receive two additional Vande Bharat trains, connecting Patna-Howrah and Ranchi-Howrah, as well as the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata. These trains will significantly reduce travel time, making them the fastest direct trains between these cities.

Reduced Travel Times

Several Vande Bharat trains will substantially cut travel times between destinations. For example, the Kacheguda-Yesvantpur route will become the fastest train on this route, while the Vijayawada-MGR Chennai Central route will also have the fastest train. Travelers on various other routes can expect reductions in travel times ranging from one to three hours.

Connecting 11 States

The nine newly launched Vande Bharat Express trains will connect 11 states: Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Gujarat. This development is especially relevant as three of these states are heading into elections.

New Energy for India

PM Modi emphasized that these trains, known as Vande Bharat Express, represent the renewed energy of the country. He expressed optimism that soon, Vande Bharat trains will connect every corner of India. Notably, these trains have gained popularity, with over 1,11,00,000 passengers having already traveled on them.

Union Railway Minister’s Presence

The inauguration ceremony also saw the presence of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. These new train services align with PM Modi’s vision of enhancing connectivity across India and providing world-class facilities to railway passengers.
